Tipping in Mexico

Do you tip in Mexico? Yes. 10–15% at restaurants is customary; tipping in pesos is best.

Restaurants and bars

  • Tip 10–15% ("propina") at sit-down restaurants; 15% or more at upscale places and tourist resorts.
  • Check the bill: some tourist restaurants add "propina incluida" or a service charge.
  • When paying by card, tell the server the tip before they run the card, since not every terminal offers a tip screen.

Everyday tips

  • Grocery baggers (often older volunteers who work for tips): 5–10 pesos.
  • Gas station attendants: 10–20 pesos, more if they clean the windshield or check the tires.
  • Taxis: not customary for metered rides; round up or tip for help with luggage.

All-inclusive resorts

Tips are "included" but small tips still reach staff directly: 20–50 pesos a night for housekeeping, 20 pesos per round for bartenders, 10% at à la carte restaurants.
